Coach Certification Requirements

AYSO provides free training for Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches. Following are the certification requirements to be a Head Coach and Assistant Coach in Region 1052:

bulletAll Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches must be Coach Safe Haven certified. This is a “one-time only” course and does not need to be repeated each year. Note that Ref Safe Haven is not a substitute for Coach Safe Haven. Click here to take the course online.

bulletHead Coaches (U6 – U19) must complete an age-appropriate Coach course. Click here for dates.

bulletU-10 Coach Certification Course "book part" available online:

An online course containing much of the information needed for U-10 Coach certification is now available on the AYSO Online Training web site.  Volunteers interested in learning more about coaching these young players can be directed this site to get the basics, then need only attend a field session in order to get the certification.  As with the other AYSO Online Training courses, access is limited to currently registered volunteers, and an AYSO Volunteer I.D. number will be needed to get on the site.  Click here to learn how to access the AYSO Online Training site.

bulletAssistant Coaches in the upper divisions (U10 – U19) must complete an age-appropriate coach course.  

bulletAssistant Coaches in the lower divisions (U6 – U8) are strongly advised to take an age-appropriate coach course.

Prerequisites for coach courses

- Before you can take the Coach Safe Haven, you must be registered on eAYSO and have a valid AYSO ID number. If you have registered with eAYSO, but do not know your ID number, send email to the regional CVPA.

-  There is no prerequisite for the U6 coach course.

- Completion of the previous age coach course is recommended for U8, U10 and U12.

- Completion of the U12 coaching course is required for the Intermediate coach course.

- Completion of the Intermediate coaching course is required for the Advanced coach course.

Safe Haven

Coach Safe Haven is now available online. It is required for all head coaches, assistant coaches & team parents.

Classroom instruction is available at the conclusion of pre-season coach meetings.  Please check the calendar or local newspapers for this information.

Completing a CPVA volunteer form

Pursuant to National guidelines, volunteers must submit a CPVA Volunteer form each year. Upon completion of your volunteer form, print 2 copies, sign and give to the CVPA.  The CVPA will ask to see your driver's license in order to confirm your current information.

Pre-Season Coaches Meeting

At the pre-season coaches meeting, the Coach Administrator will present information about AYSO, and other information that you need to know about the upcoming season.  This meeting is mandatory for all Head Coaches. See calendar for date and times of the meeting.

Team Handout

Team information will be handed out the teams at the end of the pre-season coaches meeting.

Game schedules

The game schedule will be posted on the website sometime before opening day (September 6, 2008). Check the website for updates.

COACH/ASSISTANT COACH GENERAL INFORMATION

Specific duties of a Head Coach

Once your Division Director notifies you that you have been selected to be a Head Coach, you will need to do the following:

  1. Get Training

All Head Coaches must complete a Coach Safe Haven Course and an age-appropriate Coach Clinic.

  1. Attend the Pre-season Coach Meeting on August 11, 2007

At this meeting, the Coach Administrator will present information about AYSO and anything you need to know about the upcoming season. Then you will receive your team information.

  1. Meet the Parents!

As soon as you get your team, you can call everyone and organize a team meeting.  At this meeting, you will assign an Assistant Coach and Team Parent, along with other volunteer positions and provide information about your practice schedule and other details.

  1. Schedule a Practice Time

One of the benefits of being the Head Coach is that you can choose a practice time to suits you. Work with the Scheduler to set up 1 one-hour practice (U5-U8) or 2 one-hour practices (U10-U19) per week.

  1. Pick up your team uniforms

Date TBD. Check the website or contact your Division Coordinator.

  1. Practice

After August 11th, you may begin to practice with your team at the assigned times.  Contact your Division Coordinator for information about games, drills, information, and one-on-one assistance from experienced coaches.

  1. Attend Matches

For each game, you will need to develop team line ups, make sure the players are warmed up prior to playing, and conduct substitutions during the game per AYSO rules. All games are played on Saturdays; however teams may decide to play during the week due to make up games or conflicting schedules.  The schedule will be announced prior to the start of the season. Opening day is August 25, 2007.

  1. Provide Player Ratings

Head Coaches in Divisions U8 and above must provide ratings for each of their players before the end of the season. This is important for balancing teams in the following season.

Specific duties of an Assistant Coach

As soon as you decide you want to become an Assistant Coach, you will need to do the following: 

  1. Get Training

All Assistant Coaches must complete a Coach Safe Haven Course, complete a volunteer form. Assistant Coaches in the upper divisions (U10 and above) must also take an age-appropriate Coach Clinic. Although it is not mandatory that Assistant Coaches in the lower divisions (U5 – U8) attend an age-appropriate clinic, it strongly advised. You’ll learn a lot about what to expect from the younger players, and how to make it fun through the use of games and fun drills.   1. Attend the Team Meeting

When you get a call from the Head Coach about a team meeting, let him/her know that you are interested in being an Assistant Coach, and that you have completed the required training (or that you have plans to complete it.) There may be other parents on the team who also want to be the Assistant Coach. The final decision is made by the Head Coach.

 

  1. Attend Practices

If you are selected to be the Assistant Coach, work with the Head Coach to come up with a practice time that works for both of your schedules. In the case of a conflict, the Head Coach will have the final decision. Practices are 1 one-hour practice (U6 - U8) or 2 one-hour practices (U10 - U19) per week. You will be expected to attend the practices and assist the Head Coach with training and drills as needed. 

 

If the Head Coach is absent for a practice or game, the Assistant Coach will take his/her place.  Contact your Division Coordinator for information about games, drills, and one-on-one assistance from experienced coaches.

 

  1. Attend Matches

As the Assistant Coach, you will support the Head Coach on the sideline at all games. All games for are played on Saturdays; however makeup games due to weather or conflicting schedules may be played during the week.  The schedule will be announced prior to the start of the season. Opening day is August 25, 2007.

 

  1. Support your Head Coach!

This is only a general guideline for being an Assistant Coach. Each Head Coach will have varying needs. Be prepared to help out where you’re needed, and remember there is always help available when you need it.

CVPA (VOLUNTEER FORM)

Volunteer forms must be completed and approved ANNUALLY. This is for the protection of our Children and is mandatory.

If you are volunteering for the 2007-2008 season, please do the following: 

  1. Go to “www.eayso.org” on the Internet

  2. Register as a volunteer.

  3. Complete the online volunteer form.

  4. Print and sign 2 copies.

  5. Bring to any AYSO clinic or meeting with a current drivers license.
